Public Outrage Over Bank of America's Predatory Practices

In recent weeks, there's been a growing chorus of public outrage over the lavish bonuses paid to bank executives like Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis, whose self-serving profit schemes and risky financial deals led to today's economic collapse.

After spending billions to bailout big banks for their bad behavior, taxpayers are making their voices heard in the streets, in the halls of Congress, and through online campaigns to say: Enough is enough. It's time to close the chapter on corporate excess, restore America's middle class, and create an economy that works for everyone.

Leading up to Bank of America's annual shareholder meeting on April 29, consumers, employees and shareholders will call for reform, from top to bottom, of Banks of America's practices of preying on consumers, abusing employees, and using their power in Washington to block pro-worker legislation that would help restore our economy and rebuild the middle class. Executive Board Resolves to "Stand and Deliver for Working People"

With 250 members in attendance February 20 - 21 in Columbus, the SEIU District 1199 Executive Board approved a historic campaign to turn last year's election promises on behalf of working people into a reality. The Executive Board members voted to support the national SEIU "Change That Works" campaign urging passage this year of health care for all and the Employee Free Choice Act. The Board approved the District's first chapter for retired members and also supported efforts to win permanent protections of the right to organize for all long term care workers in Ohio. SEIU 1199 hosted a reception for elected leaders on the eve of the meeting, featuring Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, other statewide officeholders, and legislative leaders. There SEIU 1199 President Becky Williams and SEIU International President Andy Stern both stressed the urgency of fixing health care and labor law. Click here for photos.

Senator Sue

Due to a weird twist and turn of events, Sue Morano’s political career began because of SEIU District 1199. As Sue told the audience during the January 2007 Executive Board meeting, in the fall of 2001, she received a phone call from Dave Regan, president of SEIU District 1199. “After a few brief minutes of general conversation, he asked me it I would consider running for public office,” said Sue. “Now in my mind, I imagined city council or possibly a school board seat. When he said State Senate, I replied “You’re kidding!”
