    EAGLE  HOSPITALITY BOYCOTT BACKGROUND

Eagle Hospitality owns the Glendale Hilton hotel in California, where workers have been involved in a labor dispute since September of 2005.  Workers at the Glendale Hilton cite poverty wages, a lack of affordable health insurance, and dangerous working conditions as some of the issues they face. The workers called for a boycott of their own hotel in April of 2006.  They seek the hotel’s agreement to let them decide on union representation without management’s opposition and interference.

On November 14, 2006, the workers announced that they would be escalating their campaign and extending the boycott to other hotels owned by Eagle Hospitality. The boycott has already resulted in numerous groups pulling over $1,200,000 worth of scheduled events from the following Eagle-owned properties - Cincinnati Marriott Rivercenter (Covington, KY), Embassy Suites Cincinnati-Rivercenter (Covington, KY), Hilton Cincinnati Airport (Florence, KY), Embassy Suites Columbus/Dublin (Dublin, OH),  Chicago Marriott S. West (Burr Ridge, IL), Embassy Suites Hotel Paradise Valley (AZ), Embassy Suites Boston Logan Airport (MA).

Glendale Hilton workers escalated their boycott once their efforts were met with fierce resistance from the owners of the hotel.  UNITE HERE filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in November 2005 and again in January 2006, together alleging that the hotel was discriminating against workers for supporting the union, threatening and disciplining employees for supporting the union, and photographing and videotaping workers while they were engaged in union activities. The Glendale Hilton settled these charges with the NLRB in July 2006 without admitting guilt and avoided a scheduled NLRB hearing on the union’s charges.  However, the workers remain without an agreement over a  fair process for deciding whether to form their union.

“We have decided to take this step of extending our boycott because we are tired of the way we are treated, the conditions we work under, and the pressure we are facing on a daily basis because of our organizing efforts. We will not give up until we are able to achieve justice in our workplace,” said Angela Reid, a bartender at the Glendale Hilton.
