ZINN ON MAKING HISTORY: "We're trying to revolutionize people's minds," historian and author Howard Zinn said Tuesday night at a Washington sneak preview of "The People Speak," a new film based on "A People’s History Of The United States," Zinn’s seminal 1980 book. "We want to make people class conscious, race conscious, environment conscious, and every other kind of conscious," added Zinn. The film, which the DC Labor FilmFest hopes to show this year, stirringly evokes the struggles of ordinary men and women for justice with riveting performances by Matt Damon, Marisa Tomei, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Brolin and other performers interwoven with fascinating archival footage and interviews exploring America's struggles with war, class, race, worker and women's rights, along with music by artists like Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder and John Legend. "There's a real hunger for knowledge of our own history," said producer Chris Moore, who explained that the film is designed to be entertaining as well as a tool for activists and teachers. "We make our own history," Zinn added.
